Emir of Kano Condemns Alarming Trend of Child Kidnapping and Trafficking, Calls for Urgent Action

The Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, has voiced strong condemnation against the disturbing surge in the kidnapping and trafficking of children, primarily from northern regions to the southern parts of the country. The Emir, represented by Dan Malikin Kano, Amb Ahmad Umar, expressed his concerns during a press conference held in Kano yesterday.

Emphasizing the gravity of the situation, the traditional ruler declared that the emirate would no longer tolerate such acts of abduction and trading of children within the state. "This ugly trend must stop. We have to rise up against it. We will no longer condone a situation whereby our children are kidnapped, sold, and their tribe and religion changed," stated Emir Aminu Ado Bayero.

Highlighting the urgency of proactive measures, he stressed, "We have to rise up to check the situation as it is going out of hand. It happened a few years ago, and it has happened again. Only God knows how many of our children have been kidnapped and sold."

The Kano State Police Command, on December 27, 2023, announced the dismantling of a human trafficking syndicate involved in the abduction, purchase, and sale of minors. Nine suspects were apprehended during the operation that spanned Kano, Bauchi, Lagos, Delta, Anambra, and Imo states. The police successfully rescued seven children, predominantly from Bauchi State.

The leader of the Igbo community in Kano, Boniface Igbekwe, also strongly condemned the reprehensible act. Represented by the prime minister of the Igbo community, Chief Nwaimo Efanyi, he urged authorities to ensure that the perpetrators face justice. Igbekwe asserted that the Igbo community in Kano is committed to living peacefully with others and dissociated themselves from any heinous acts committed in their name.

As concerns grow over the increasing incidence of child trafficking, the call for concerted efforts to curb this menace has gained momentum among community leaders, law enforcement, and the public at large.
