Rivers State Governor Facilitates Peace Amidst Political Turmoil as Factional Speaker Resigns

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, announced on Tuesday that the resignation of the factional Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Edison Ehie, was a strategic move to foster peace in the politically embroiled state.

Addressing attendees at the inaugural state banquet in Government House Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara clarified that his commitment to resolving the Rivers political crisis stemmed from a dedication to peace rather than fear. The state has been in turmoil following an attempt by 27 lawmakers loyal to ex-governor Nyesom Wike to impeach Fubara.

To prevent the impeachment, the Assembly complex was bombed on October 29, leading to factionalization within the House. President Bola Tinubu intervened, orchestrating a meeting in Abuja where an eight-point resolution was signed to quell the crisis. Despite concerns that the resolutions favored Wike, Governor Fubara vowed to adhere to the terms.

Recently, Speaker Edison Ehie, who opposed the impeachment move, resigned without providing a reason. Governor Fubara, speaking on Monday, emphasized that all decisions were calculated to ensure peace, asserting, “Whatever it will take, as seen in our decisions... a lot of people were worried: why would the Speaker resign? It is to tell you what we can do for peace to reign.”

Governor Fubara reassured that his administration would not engage in divisive political battles that could hinder the state's development. He urged citizens to embrace peace, highlighting the collective interest in the state's progress.

In his welcome address, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, commended Governor Fubara for remaining focused on delivering democratic dividends despite the political turbulence. He called on Rivers people to champion peace, truth, and justice for the state to continue its trajectory of greatness. Governor Fubara emphasized his administration's commitment to leaving a legacy of unity and development in Rivers State rather than one of political tension.
