Shocking Arrest: Two Police Inspectors and Three Vigilantes Nabbed for Armed Robbery Spree in Lagos and Ogun

In a startling development, Zone 2 Police Command, Onikan, Lagos, has apprehended two rogue Police Inspectors, Sunday Adetoye and Opaleye Stephen, along with three members of a vigilante group, for their alleged involvement in a series of armed robbery operations across Lagos and Ogun States.

The dismissed Policemen, accused of conspiracy and armed robbery, were reportedly part of a criminal gang that targeted a private residence in Obada-Oko, Ogun State. During the operation, the suspects, armed with two SMG rifles and live ammunition, allegedly made off with valuable items, including smartphones and laptops.

Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Ari Muhammed Ali, overseeing Zone 2 Command, ordered the dismissal of the two officers and directed their prosecution, along with the three vigilantes involved. The arrested officers were identified as AP. No. 279495 Inspector Sunday Adetoye and AP. No. 223521 Inspector Opaleye Stephen, both attached to the Zonal Command Headquarters in Onikan.

According to Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, SP Umma Tunni Ayuba, the incident unfolded on November 23, 2023, at about 10 pm. The dismissed officers, who were already facing trial for a similar offense, joined forces with the vigilantes to carry out an illegal search at the residence, resulting in the theft of electronic devices.

While one ASP Ajayi Victor, who allegedly led the operation, is currently at large, the apprehended suspects were nabbed at a roadblock set up by officers from Ifo Division, acting on information provided by residents.

AIG Ari Muhammed Ali emphasized zero tolerance for unprofessional and corrupt practices within the force. He urged all officers to adhere to the law and assured the public that the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, is committed to maintaining professionalism and accountability. The AIG encouraged the public to report any unprofessional conduct by officers and assured swift action against wrongdoing.
