BREAKING: PRESIDENT TINUBU APPROVES N500 MILLION FOR NEW NATIONAL MINIMUM WAGES COMMITTEE

Breaking: President Tinubu Approves N500 Million for New National Minimum Wage Committee

President Tinubu and the Signed Memo

In a leaked memo obtained by SaharaReporters, it has been revealed that President Bola Tinubu has given his approval for the allocation of N500 million towards the inauguration and funding of the 37-man Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage. This decision comes after the initial request submitted by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, for a budget of N1 billion.

According to the leaked letter titled, ‘Request For Approval Of Funds And Inauguration Of The Tripartite Committee On National Minimum Wage,’ President Tinubu instructed the committee to start with the approved budget of N500 million, cutting down their initial request by 50%.

Reacting to the leaked memo, former federal lawmaker Shehu Sani expressed concerns, stating, "The Minimum Wage Committee just allocated the maximum wage for themselves."

This revelation comes amidst the recent inauguration of the 37-man Tripartite Committee on New National Minimum Wage by Nigerian Vice President Kashim Shettima, which took place at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja on January 30, 2024.

In response to the news, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, criticized the composition of the committee, highlighting that most of the governors representing the states on the committee were not fully compliant with the current N30,000 minimum wage policy.

"A state like Zamfara, I don’t know how much Borno and Bauchi are paying, there is a minimum wage law which criminalizes the non-compliance of the minimum wage," Ajaero emphasized.

As discussions surrounding the new national minimum wage continue, stakeholders await further developments on the matter.

Stay tuned for more updates.
