NAVIGATING DEMOCRATIC STABILITY: OGUN ASSEMBLY CRISIS UNVEILS POLITICAL CHALLENGES

Navigating Democratic Stability: Ogun Assembly Crisis Unveils Political Challenges

By Tayo Mabeweje

In the immortal words of Mark Twain, "In the beginning of change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned. When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot." This sentiment resonates as the Ogun State House of Assembly grapples with internal strife, putting the democratic process to the test. The alleged impeachment of Speaker Honourable Olakunle Oluomo has triggered a series of events, prompting intervention from the Ogun State Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership.

The internal discord within the Assembly, a persistent issue that has now reached a critical juncture, necessitates a democratic and just approach. As Mark Twain's words suggest, the current challenges may be paving the way for a necessary change. The government's intervention underscores a commitment to resolving disputes and maintaining a focus on delivering democratic dividends.

Despite the intensity of the disagreements, it's important to note that the rift within the Assembly does not extend to the Governor, as members reiterate their loyalty to his leadership.

Reflecting on the political landscape, Alexis de Tocqueville once remarked, "The health of a democratic society may be measured by the quality of functions performed by private citizens." The Ogun State Government and APC leadership echo this sentiment, resolute in their commitment to a fair and peaceful resolution, respecting the mandate bestowed by the Ogun electorate. The intervention aims to uphold democratic principles and foster an environment where differing opinions can be addressed amicably.

In the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt "Democracy cannot succeed unless those who express their choice are prepared to choose wisely. The real safeguard of democracy, therefore, is education." The House of Assembly holds the prerogative to choose its leadership, a right enshrined in constitutional and legal provisions.

Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, emphasizes the administration's commitment to considering all Assembly members as partners in the "Building our Future" agenda. This collective effort signals a commitment to prioritizing the issues affecting the Assembly members, fostering unity, and ensuring stability within the political landscape.

As the Ogun State Government navigates through these challenging times, the overarching goal remains the delivery of democratic dividends to the people. The proactive steps, in collaboration with party leadership, reflect a commitment to democratic values and a desire to uphold the trust placed in them by the electorate.

In the wise words of Mahatma Gandhi, "You must be the change you want to see in the world." The Ogun Assembly crisis serves as a reminder of the complexities within the political arena, highlighting the need for stability in ensuring effective governance and service delivery.

the hope is for a peaceful resolution that will pave the way for continued progress and development in Ogun State. The unfolding events underscore the significance of democratic stability and the resilience required to navigate the intricacies of political challenges.
