The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS has announced the temporary suspension of its food disposal initiative following a tragic incident during a distribution exercise in Lagos. The initiative, aimed at alleviating hardships and improving access to essential food items, faced unforeseen challenges leading to fatalities and injuries.

The exercise, which commenced on Friday, 23 February 2024, at the NCS Old Zonal Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos state, was well-planned to address potential risks. However, as the distribution progressed and stocks ran out, the crowd became desperate, resulting in a stampede as people searched for rice bags inside emptied containers.

Expressing deep regret over the incident, the NCS extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and assured them of unwavering support. An internal investigation has been initiated to understand the circumstances surrounding the event.

In light of the incident, the NCS has suspended the food disposal initiative to allow for a thorough review and the implementation of more robust and comprehensive measures. The service reiterated its commitment to the welfare and safety of Nigerians, acknowledging the need for heightened sensitivity and preventive measures in all operations.

The NCS urged for understanding and cooperation from the public as they work towards addressing challenges facing the nation's food security. Further updates on the initiative will be communicated as the investigation progresses.
