Security Alert: Nigerian High Commission Warns Nigerians in South Africa Over Provocative Celebrations

The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has released a security alert for Nigerian citizens in anticipation of the upcoming 2024 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final clash between Nigeria's Super Eagles and South Africa's Bafana Bafana.

In a statement issued on Monday, February 5, 2024, the High Commission noted concerning online remarks and veiled threats against Nigerians from certain quarters in South Africa.

As a precautionary measure, the High Commission urged Nigerian residents to exercise caution in their speech, choose safe venues for viewing the game, and avoid engaging in disruptive or provocative behavior in the event of a victory for the Super Eagles.

Furthermore, Nigerians were reminded to uphold their reputation for good conduct and abide by the law before, during, and after the match. Any instances of provocation should be reported to the relevant authorities rather than responded to in kind.
