South Africa Responds to Nigerian High Commission's Warning Ahead of AFCON Clash

In response to the Nigerian High Commission's cautionary advisory to Nigerians living in South Africa regarding "provocative celebrations" after the anticipated AFCON match between the Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana, the South African government has offered a rebuttal.

Addressing concerns of potential xenophobic attacks stemming from frustrated South African supporters, South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) dismissed the warning as a "false alarm." Despite the longstanding rivalry between the two footballing powerhouses, DIRCO emphasized that there is no history of soccer hooliganism directed at Nigerian citizens during matches against Nigeria.

Asserting confidence in the sportsmanship of the nation, DIRCO expressed disagreement with the apprehensions raised by the Nigerian High Commission, calling the advisory regrettable for potentially stoking unnecessary tension between South African citizens and Nigerians residing in or visiting the country.

Notably, Nigeria has yet to issue a response to the statement from South African officials.

The exchange comes amidst a backdrop of recent xenophobic attacks targeting African migrants in South Africa, a trend that has sparked widespread concern and condemnation across the continent.

Earlier, Nigeria's diplomatic service had issued the warning in light of perceived veiled threats against Nigerians online, urging caution in public spaces and restraint in celebration should the Super Eagles emerge victorious.

As anticipation builds for the semi-final clash, scheduled for Wednesday at 17:00 GMT in the Ivorian city of Bouaké, all eyes remain on the unfolding dynamics both on and off the pitch.
