Former Police Officer Turned Armed Robber Arrested by Rivers Police Commissioner
The Rivers Police Commissioner, Tunji Disu, announced the arrest of a former police officer turned armed robber, Monday Igbali, during a press conference at the State Police Command. Igbali, who had been dismissed from the force for involvement in kidnapping in 2021, was apprehended alongside 25 others.
According to Commissioner Disu, Igbali, now 43, had been operating as a fake police officer, posing as an Inspector, and robbing motorists at gunpoint with his gang. Their criminal activities were brought to light when they robbed Fibika Kingsley of his Lexus EX330.
Following a report filed by Kingsley on August 11, 2023, stating that his Lexus EX330 had been stolen at gunpoint by five gunmen along Agip road, investigations were launched, leading to Igbali's arrest. Hailing from Okwuzi in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGA of Rivers State, Igbali had been dismissed from the police force after his involvement in a kidnapping case.
Since his dismissal, Igbali had been involved in a string of car robberies, having sold nine cars for amounts ranging between N1.3m and N2.5m each. The police managed to recover three cars, including a Lexus 330, Lexus IS250, and Toyota Highlander, upon his arrest on March 8, 2024, at his residence in Chokocho, Etche. While Igbali is in custody, four other gang members remain at large.
