LAGOS GOVERNMENT TO ENFORCE DRAINAGE RIGHT OF WAY IN APAPA PROMOTING FLOOD MITIGATION EFFORTS

Lagos State Government to Enforce Drainage Right of Way in Apapa, Promoting Flood Mitigation Efforts

The Lagos State Government has announced plans to commence enforcement operations in Apapa aimed at reclaiming the three-meter drainage Right of Way for all its drainage channels. This initiative comes as part of the government's ongoing efforts to address the longstanding issue of drainage management in the state.

Following an inspection tour to assess the level of compliance, the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, emphasized the importance of restoring the drainage Right of Way. He stated that the enforcement activities are necessary following the expiration of notices and stakeholder meetings with property owners earlier in the year.

Wahab highlighted the critical need to address the state of collectors in Apapa, as many are currently blocked due to encroachments by individuals who have extended their fences into the drainage setback. This encroachment has hindered access to the drains, posing significant challenges for effective drainage management in the area.

During the inspection, the Commissioner also addressed concerns regarding the conversion of residential areas into unauthorized depots, such as the case observed on Rock Drive in Lekki I. He emphasized the potential risk of a major fire outbreak in the area and directed immediate enforcement measures to address the illegal activity.

In support of the government's flood mitigation efforts, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, the Special Adviser on Environment, reaffirmed the state government's determination to find realistic solutions to the flooding issue across Lagos State. He urged residents to play their part by adopting responsible waste disposal practices to complement the government's efforts in ensuring a flood-free environment.

The enforcement operations in Apapa and other affected areas underscore the government's commitment to promoting sustainable urban development and enhancing the resilience of communities against flooding disasters. As the government continues to implement proactive measures, collaboration between stakeholders remains crucial in achieving long-term solutions to drainage management challenges in Lagos State.
