URGENT APPEAL: NUJ CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF KIDNAPPED CHANNELS TV REPORTER

Urgent Appeal: NUJ Calls for Immediate Release of Kidnapped Channels TV Reporter

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is issuing a pressing plea for the swift release of Joshua Rogers, a dedicated reporter with Channels TV, who was forcefully abducted from his residence in Rumuosi, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday evening.

Rogers, returning from an official assignment at the government house, fell victim to unknown gunmen around 9 p.m., who intercepted him and forcefully took him away in a Channels Television-branded vehicle.

In a distressing turn of events, the kidnappers have demanded a ransom of N30 million for Rogers' release, further exacerbating concerns over the safety of journalists and media practitioners in the country.

The NUJ is gravely alarmed by the escalating insecurity faced by those committed to the crucial task of informing the public. This unfortunate incident underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures to protect journalists nationwide.

Appealing to the Rivers State Government and relevant security agencies, the NUJ urges prioritized efforts towards securing Rogers' safe and immediate release. Ensuring his well-being and safety during this challenging time is of paramount importance.

Highlighting the severity of the situation, the NUJ emphasizes the imperative for united action to address the escalating threats against journalists across Nigeria.

Swift and effective measures must be implemented to secure Rogers' freedom and bring an end to this distressing ordeal. The NUJ stands in unwavering solidarity with Joshua Rogers and his family, demanding immediate action to facilitate his safe return.

Dr. Chris Isiguzo,

National President, NUJ
