NCS RESPOND TO VIRAL VIDEO

Nigerian Customs Responds to Viral Video of Confrontation with Vehicle Inspection Officers

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has issued a formal response to a video that has been widely circulated on social media, depicting a confrontation between its officers and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO).

The incident, which took place on Friday, May 24, 2024, at the AYA Roundabout near the Abuja VIO Office, involved NCS personnel from the Customs Mechanical Unit based in Karu Barracks, Abuja.

In a press statement released today, the NCS expressed deep concern and empathy for those affected by the incident. The Service firmly dissociated itself from the actions of the officers involved, describing their behavior as self-motivated and contrary to the values and operational standards of the NCS.

“The NCS unequivocally dissociates itself from the actions of these officers. Their condemned behaviour, which appears to be self-motivated, is under thorough investigation, and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to forestall future occurrences,” the statement read.

The NCS emphasized that the incident undermines the key policy of fostering collaboration with other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their properties. The Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi MFR, and his management team condemned the conduct, reiterating their commitment to professionalism and inter-agency cooperation.

“This incident contradicts the values and operational standards of the NCS. Such behaviour undermines one of the key policy thrusts of the Comptroller-General of Customs, which is to foster collaboration with sister security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their properties,” the statement continued.

The NCS assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that disciplinary actions will be taken to prevent a recurrence. The Service remains committed to its mission of generating revenue, facilitating trade, and suppressing smuggling to support a robust and secure economy for all Nigerians.

The press release was signed by Abdullahi Maiwada, Chief Superintendent of Customs and National Public Relations Officer, on behalf of the Comptroller-General of Customs.
