Group Reaffirms Commitment Following Army's Response to Banex Plaza Incident

- Societal Concerns Initiative to Continue Campaign Against Killing of Security Personnel

Ambassador Oluwayomi, the Convener of the Societal Concerns Initiative, has emphasized the organization's ongoing commitment to combating the killing of security personnel. This announcement comes in the wake of Maj-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu's response to the recent violent attack on unarmed Nigerian Army personnel at Banex Plaza in Abuja.

The Societal Concerns Initiative launched its "Walk Against the Killing of Security Personnel" for the first time in April 2024 in Lagos. During the event, Lagos Commissioner of Police, CP Fayoade Adegoke, mni, addressed the participants on behalf of Inspector General of Police IG Egbetokun at the police command. The walk culminated at the Lagos House of Assembly, where the group was received by Speaker RT. Hon. Musashiru Obasa, represented by Chairman House Committee on Information, Strategy and Security. Hon  Ogundipe Stephen Kayode.

Amb. Oluwayomi stated that the initiative will continue its campaign across other states until legislation is enacted to protect security personnel. The response from Maj-Gen Nwachukwu regarding the Banex Plaza incident serves as a stark warning and highlights the need for public reorientation about the role and importance of security personnel in Nigeria.

"The Societal Concerns Initiative is determined to take this campaign to every state," Amb. Oluwayomi declared. "We will not rest until a bill is passed to safeguard our security forces."

The Nigerian Army's condemnation of the Banex Plaza attack and its immediate actions underline the urgent necessity for societal support and respect for security personnel. The initiative's walks and advocacy efforts aim to foster a culture of respect and cooperation, ensuring that grievances against security forces are addressed through proper channels rather than through violence.

As the Societal Concerns Initiative continues its mission, it calls on all citizens to support the campaign and help create a safer environment for those who protect and serve the nation.
