IGP EGBETOKUN ADDRESSES SECURITY CHALLENGES AHEAD OF PLANNED NATIONWIDE PROTESTS

Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun Addresses Security Challenges Ahead of Planned Nationwide Protests

In a strategic meeting with senior police officers, Inspector-General of Police Olukayode Egbetokun discussed the upcoming nationwide protests and other pressing security challenges. Egbetokun underscored the police force's commitment to maintaining order, affirming that while the right to peaceful protest is protected by law, violent protests will not be tolerated.

"The right to peaceful protest is what the law protects. The right to violent protest is criminal, and that is what the Nigerian Police will not allow," Egbetokun stated.

During the meeting, Egbetokun also praised the reduction in crime rates observed in July, attributing this success to the collaborative efforts with other security agencies and the dedication of police personnel.

Meanwhile, Tony Okocha, Chairman of the Rivers State APC, urged youths to refrain from participating in the planned protests, suggesting that frustrated politicians were behind the demonstrations. He called for support for President Bola Tinubu, emphasizing the president's commitment to moving Nigeria forward.

"We should support the president as he is determined to move Nigeria forward. It will take time, but the process is in place," Okocha said.

Okocha also criticized a judge handling APC-related cases, accusing him of bias and calling for his recusal. "The latent motive of the judge seems to be to remove us from the scene and enthrone a group that has been dissolved for anti-party activities. It is unacceptable for a group of young men to berate the party at the national level," he added.

As the nation braces for the upcoming protests, the police force remains vigilant, committed to ensuring public safety and upholding the law.
