Lagos Assembly Seeks Clarification on Supreme Court Judgment, Commends Police for Anti-Kidnapping Operation, and Applauds First Lady’s Garden Initiative

The Lagos State House of Assembly has invited the Attorney-General, Mr. Lawal Pedro, to explain the recent Supreme Court judgment regarding local governments in Nigeria. The court ruled that the 774 local government councils should receive their funds directly from the Federal Government and manage them independently, declaring allocations to councils run by caretaker committees illegal.

Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, emphasized the need for clarity on the judgment to ensure compliance, stating, “It will be good to invite the Attorney-General to brief us and give his understanding so that we do not run foul of the judgement.”

In other news, the Lagos Assembly has resolved to commend the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Adegoke Mustapha Fayoade, for a successful operation that led to the elimination of nine kidnappers in the state. The Speaker praised the police for their efforts, stressing the importance of recognizing their hard work and urging them to continue ensuring the state’s safety. He also highlighted the need to fast-track considerations for creating state police to support the federal police system.

The Majority Leader, Hon. Noheem Adams, recounted the police operation in the Ladipo area, which brought calm to the region and noted that the Ikorodu area, previously troubled by kidnappings, now enjoys relative peace.

Additionally, the Assembly applauded Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her initiative to encourage subsistence agriculture by promoting home gardens. The Speaker noted that this initiative could help achieve food sufficiency and suggested a return to the days when schools had farms, reflecting on the current need for such practices.
