TINUBU STRESSES PEACEFUL PROTESTVAND DEMOCRACY MEETING WITH NEW U.S AMBASSADOR

Tinubu Stresses Peaceful Protest and Democracy in Meeting with New U.S. Ambassador

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to peaceful protests and the sustenance of democracy in Nigeria during his meeting with the newly appointed United States Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Richard Mills Jr., at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Receiving the ambassador's Letter of Credence, President Tinubu highlighted his involvement in non-violent protests during Nigeria's military rule. He emphasized that while protests are a vital aspect of democracy, the government will not tolerate demonstrations that lead to violence or property destruction.

"Our relationship with America is rich. We believe in democracy and freedom. Some of your predecessors worked hard during our transition to democracy, and we remember the likes of Ambassador Howard Jeter," Tinubu said.

He expressed optimism about continued cooperation between Nigeria and the U.S. on shared goals and democratic values. He also noted Nigeria's 25 years of uninterrupted democracy and his commitment to maintaining it.

Tinubu called on the U.S. to enhance its focus on Africa, recognizing Nigeria's role as the continent's largest democracy. "Nigeria is ready to play its role as the largest democracy in Africa that is worthy of emulation to other African countries, but we need more U.S. partnership on the continent that is beneficial to both sides. We believe in freedom, and we are providing the leadership to make Nigeria’s economy grow," he stated.

Ambassador Mills affirmed the U.S.'s support for Nigeria's democracy and pledged to advocate for larger roles for Nigeria in the international arena.
