Defence Minister Orders Military Chiefs Relocate Sokoto, Combat North West Terrorism

Defence Minister Orders Military Chiefs Relocate to Sokoto, Combat North West Banditry and Terrorism

In a decisive move aimed at eliminating the persistent threat of banditry and terrorism in the North West region, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Muhammed Matawalle, has ordered the Chief of Defence Staff and other top military officials to relocate to Sokoto State. This directive underscores the Federal Government’s intensified efforts to restore peace and security in the region.

Matawalle expressed deep concern and sadness over the activities of criminal elements terrorizing Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi States, and their environs. He highlighted the urgency of the situation, particularly noting the alarming operations of notorious bandit leader Bello Turji and his gang. The Minister emphasized that the military chiefs, while stationed in Sokoto, will specifically oversee operations to ensure that Turji and his cohorts are flushed out.

Sokoto State, which serves as the headquarters of the General Officer Commanding (GOC) overseeing Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states, will now be the focal point for this critical military operation. The Minister’s decision to personally relocate to the region, alongside the military chiefs, signals the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating the menace of banditry and terrorism.

"The Federal Government is deeply concerned about the persistent threat posed by banditry and terrorism in the North West, particularly. We are ready to deploy all necessary assets to ensure that these criminal elements are flushed out and peace is restored to our communities," Matawalle stated. He assured the people of the region that increased and consistent military operations will dismantle the bases of these criminals.

The Minister also referenced a recent incident in Kwashabawa, Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State, where bandits circulated a video celebrating the immobilization of a Nigerian military armored vehicle. The vehicle had been stuck in a waterlogged area, and the soldiers were forced to withdraw to avoid an ambush. This incident, Matawalle noted, is unacceptable and underscores the need for decisive action against the bandits.

Matawalle called on the residents of Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, and Kebbi states to remain vigilant and cooperate with the security forces as they intensify efforts to secure the region. He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the lives and properties of all Nigerians, emphasizing that the security and well-being of the people remain the government’s top priority.

"The time is up for these bandits and terrorists," Matawalle declared, urging the Armed Forces of Nigeria to relentlessly pursue the criminals. He assured the public that no stone will be left unturned until the North West is rid of banditry and terrorism.

With the Minister and military chiefs now on the ground in the North West, there is renewed hope that these intensified operations will finally bring an end to the reign of terror that has plagued the region.
